Schlangenhaus - Fürstenfeldbruck (DE)

Belgian solar shading specialist introduces remarkable architecture across the border

The time when the façades of houses had a somewhat monotonous look is very much a thing of the past, to the great relief of both architect and householder. Extraordinary structures very much set the tone these days. We find proof of this near the Bavarian city of Munich, where the German architect Franz Madl and the West Flanders solar shading manufacturer DUCO have shown their most creative side in the design of this fine piece of architecture. The building was given the fitting name of Schlangenhaus, referring to the slender, agile body of the snake.

Increasingly more clients are aware of the necessity to introduce to the market unique housing projects if they wish to stand out at a time when a blind construction frenzy is dominating our landscape. It was with this in mind that the client Kaufeigenheime from Ingolstadt came to architect Franz Madl, who was more than happy to tackle this specific issue. On an area of 14,000 m2 in Fürstenfeldbruck this resulted in, for example, a hypermarket and dozens of dwelling units, including some deluxe penthouses. At first sight nothing special you may think. But we have not yet considered the form of the building, which, there is no two ways about it, was given an extraordinary look. A feast for the eyes, but not without its challenges that are concealed behind the façade.

Special solar shading version

And these challenges are the heat of the sun, incoming light and privacy. This was right up DUCO's street, which transformed the high requirements of the curved façade structure into a true success story thanks to an efficient exterior shading system.

Despite the curved guide sections above and below, a special version of DucoSlide made it possible to slide the mobile, aluminium panels with wood grain. In this way, the balance between maximum privacy and solar shading on the one hand and the maintenance of daylight on the other is kept in an aesthetic, natural and energy-efficient manner.

Afterwards, both the client and architects as well as the residents of Schlangenhaus attested unanimously that living in tranquillity, comfort and luxury in a city centre is not merely a utopian dream. A result that, as a partner on this project, DUCO can also be justifiably proud of!
