Louvre Grilles or Louvre Wall Systems?
A specifier's guide to choosing the right DUCO louvre solution
When specifying ventilation and façade solutions, one of the most common questions is straightforward: should you use a louvre grille or a continuous louvre wall system?
Both deliver excellent airflow and weather protection, but they are designed for fundamentally different applications.
This guide sets out the key distinctions to help architects, contractors, acoustic consultants, and all specifiers make the right call from the outset.
Quick Reference: Which system do you need?
|
Louvre Grilles (DucoGrille) • Smaller, defined openings • Modular / panel-based installations • Glazed in • Blades retained within a frame
|
Louvre Wall Systems (DucoWall) • Continuous aesthetic • Cladding over entire building elevations • Projects demanding high ventilation flow • Can be combined with security and acoustic requirements
|
Louvre Grilles: Ideal for smaller openings and modular applications
DUCO's louvre grilles are the go-to solution when ventilation is needed through discrete, defined apertures. They combine intensive ventilation performance with a clean, architecturally considered aesthetic, and are available in a wide range of profiles, finishes, and colours to meet almost any design brief.
All DUCO louvre grilles can be supplied with an insect screen and are straightforward to install, making them well suited to repetitive or modular applications across a façade.
Product Range
- DucoGrille Classic and DucoGrille Solid
- DucoGrille Close: Closeable louvres for controlled ventilation
- DucoGrille Acoustic: Sound-attenuating louvres for noise-sensitive environments
- DucoGrille NightVent: Designed for secure night time cooling
- DucoGrille Transfer: Internal air transfer between spaces
- DUCO Barrier Load Louvres: Offering fall protection in high rise accommocation such as Student Accommodation.
Best suited for
Louvre grilles are the natural choice where ventilation openings are small, repeating and in many different positions on the façade.
Louvre wall systems: Designed for large-scale façade integration
Where a building requires ventilation or screening across a large uninterrupted area - or where the louvre is the primary architectural cladding element - a continuous louvre wall system is the correct specification. DUCO's DucoWall range delivers high flow rates, architectural consistency, and structural performance at scale, with options to address acoustic, security, and sustainability requirements.
The DucoWall family uses DUCO's patented Turn-Click system, or Direct Clip system, allowing individual blade holders to be positioned on support profiles or independently for a precise, consistent finish. Installation is fast, and the reduced support structure required by some systems reduces overall project cost.
Product Range
- DucoWall Classic: Aluminium louvre blades locked onto plastic or aluminium blade holders via the Turn-Click system. Many blade profiles available. Verified and validated EPDs.
- DucoWall Acoustic: Extruded aluminium louvre blades fitted with non-combustible mineral wool on the inside for sound attenuation. Suitable for acoustically sensitive façade specifications.
- DucoWall Solid: Z-shaped aluminium blades locked directly onto the support mullion via the Direct Clip system. Minimal support structure required, vandal-proof, and suited to exposed or high-risk locations.
Security rating
DucoWall continuous louvre wall systems achieve an RC3 burglar-resistance rating - - making them appropriate for applications where enhanced security is a design or building regulation requirement.
Sustainability and EPDs
The DucoWall and DucoGrille ranges– as well as the architectural solar shading products DucoSlide and DucoSun - have verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). For projects subject to BREEAM, LEED, or other green building assessments where material transparency and embodied carbon data are required, these EPDs provide the documentation needed to satisfy credit criteria.
Thermal comfort
Continuous louvre wall systems are particularly effective as part of a passive cooling strategy. During warm summer months, intensive ventilation - combined with external solar shading - allows a building's indoor climate to remain controllable without mechanical cooling. The high ventilation flow rates achievable through DucoWall systems make them well suited to this approach.
Best suited for
DucoWall systems are the right choice for commercial, industrial, and large scale buildings where the louvre forms a significant part of the external envelope - data centres requiring large-area free-air cooling, car parks with open-deck ventilation requirements, office buildings with passive ventilation strategies, and any project where acoustic attenuation at the façade is specified.
Decision Guide for Specifiers
The following questions will help narrow down the correct product family at RIBA Stage 2 or Stage 3:
- What is the scale of the opening?
Panel-sized or modular → DucoGrille / DucoDoor. Façade-spanning or continuous → DucoWall.
- Is acoustic performance a requirement?
For grille-scale acoustic needs → DucoGrille Acoustic. For façade-scale acoustic attenuation → DucoWall Acoustic or DucoWall Screening Acoustic (with Double Bank option for enhanced performance).
- What security rating is required?
RC2 (doors and grilles) → DucoGrille Solid / DucoDoor. RC3 (wall systems) → DucoWall.
- Is an EPD required for sustainability credits?
EPDs are available for DucoWall and DucoGrille (and DucoSun and DucoSlide). Contact DUCO for documentation.
- Does the specification include a louvre door?
DUCO's DucoDoor range - available in Wall, Louvre, and Grille variants - provides a coordinated solution for technical access whilst maintaining a uniform elevation alongside louvre grilles or wall systems.
Specify with Confidence
Both product families are manufactured by DUCO to the same standards of quality and finish, and can be specified with the same palette of aluminium profiles and powder-coat colours to achieve a cohesive façade.
If you are unsure which system is most appropriate for your project, DUCO's technical team can provide guidance, NBS specification clauses, and project-specific performance data.
